Your hair really says a lot about you, it enhances your overall personality and can also reflect your health.

Although hair loss is not a life-threatening situation, it certainly spoils self confidence and it may also imply internal health problems.

Many factors affect your hair, healthy hair and scalp needs proper care right from the very beginning. If you neglect your hair for long, it will turn brittle with split-ends. Serious cases of neglect can lead to dandruff and hair loss. Studies suggest that in a large number of cases, hair loss is genetic, however diet, general health, vitamin and hormonal deficiencies, overuse of hair dye, physical and emotional stress can also lead to uncontrolled hair loss.

The good news is we can control some of these factors

Maintain a healthy Diet. A balanced diet containing all essential vitamins and minerals can help minimize hair loss. You should include green, leafy vegetables, raw oats, and whole grain cereals, eggs, dates, and raisins in your daily food regime.

Because hair is made of protein, it is also a good idea to include protein rich food in your diet. Calves liver, yeast, and wheat germ all contain protein as well as Vitamin B, which is an important nutrient for hair.

The outer coverings of potatoes, cucumbers, and green and red peppers are high in silica, which is also essential in maintaining strong and beautiful hair.

Vitamin E also promotes hair growth and reduces hair fall.

A person may experience hair loss due to thyroid dysfunction also. Therefore, you must include foods, which are good sources of vitamin A and iodine.

Washing Routine. Your hair cleansing routine will largely depend on your hair-type. In general those with oily hair will wash more regularly than those with dry hair. Some may need to wash every day, others just twice a week. Never use water that is too hot or too cold to wash your hair. And while cleaning or massaging your scalp, you should always use your fingertips in a gentle rubbing motion.

Proper Combing. Using a wide-tooth comb and always comb down to ensure you are not breaking the hair as you brush. A wooden or tortoise shell comb is better than a rubber one. Avoid combing wet hair. Hair is at its weakest when it is wet.

Drying Your Hair. If possible, allow your hair to dry naturally. Avoid using a blow dryer as its heat can damage your hair making it appear coarse and lifeless.

Use of Shampoo and Conditioner. Always choose a simple formula shampoo, these usually cost less money and are often more effective. Remember, the basic purpose of a shampoo is to wash away the dirt and the oil. Try to find a milder shampoo, which is less expensive and more beneficial for your hair.

Apply a good quality conditioner once you have cleaned your hair with the shampoo, but do not over-condition your hair.

Using A Good Conditioner. Conditioner can help protect your hair from sudden environmental changes when visiting the beach or taking a dip in a pool. Find an effective conditioner that protects your hair from the sun, chlorine, and sea water.

You should also wear a protective hat or a cap to avoid overexposing your hair to the sun, salt or chlorinated water and pollution.

Choose a Comfortable Hairstyle. There are many ways to wear your hair that can truly reflect your style whilst significantly enhancing your personality. Remember that hair straightening, dying, and other harsh styling techniques can damage the hair.

Avoid Using Harsh Chemicals. The harsh chemicals present in hair dye and perm treatments also affect the health and growth of your hair. Therefore, you must avoid coloring your hair more than once every 2-4 months depending on your hair type

Limit the Use of Alcohol and Cigarettes. Reduce alcohol consumption and also avoid using it on your hair. Avoid using hair care products that contain alcohol, this can cause your hair to become dry, brittle and prone to breakage.

Have a Healthy Regular Sleep. Sleeping pattern also affects the life and health of your hair. Restless sleep can cause the hair to break, so if you happen to fall into this category of sleepers, then it’s a good idea to use a satin pillow case which allows your hair to move smoothly causing less breakage.

Also take care to Comb your hair gently while going to bed. You should also gently remove all bands or clips used during the day.
